It is the only natural expanse of water in Scotland usually to be called a lake. Known as the Loch of Mentieth until the 19th century, its modern name may be a Victorian alteration reflecting its English parkland setting. The expanse of water covers over 700 acres, and being relatively clear, shallow and well stocked with fish, is very attractive to ospreys in search of a meal. From the car park on the B8034, a ferry runs out to Inchmahome, on which stand the remains of a Augustinian priory built in 1238. This site is administered by Historic Scotland and a visit is an ideal way to combine a bit of Scottish and natural history. |
