Seasonal guide – summer

Summer is a busy time in the Trossachs, with people and animals all on the move! Trees are lush with greenery, while trout and salmon rise in the lochs and rivers. Most birds and animals are rearing young at this time of the year, so it’s a great time to spot them feeding.

Highlights:

• The light summer evenings and early mornings are a great time to spot some of the areas shyer night creatures. Although tawny owls prefer to hunt in darkness, barn owls can sometimes be seen swooping along the hedgerows like ghosts at dusk. Keep an eye out also for short-eared owls, which prefer to hunt in daylight.
• Now is the best time to watch the ospreys on camera at the David Marshall Lodge, as the devoted parents return to the nest to feed their hungry chicks. You can return several times during the season to watch these balls of fluff develop into mini adults in a matter of weeks.
• The ospreys are also busy fishing on the lochs and lakes at this time of the year, so it’s a great time to take a boat trip, and cross your fingers that your paths meet!
• Many migrant warblers nest in the Trossachs. Walks from Callander should give you plenty of opportunities to listen out for pied flycatchers and whitethroats.
• Roe deer are active at this time of the year, so keep a look out for them in the fields, particularly near bands of trees. And watch out for them on the roads at night!
• Yellowhammers can be heard singing throughout the areas. Keep your ears peeled for ‘little bit of bread and no cheese!’
