MERLIN (resident on moorland but hard to see)
The merlin is the smallest bird of prey to be found along the Trail. It is likely to be seen in winter as it dashes at high-speed close to the ground hunting small perching birds on farmland or upon open moorland.
Wingspan: 2 feet (55-65 cm)
Colour: Male (pictured), the female is dark brown above with a lighter brown breast.
Similar to: kestrel, peregrine
How do I know? The smallest bird of prey, similar in size to a blackbird.
