David Marshall Lodge, Aberfoyle, is run by Forestry Commission Scotland. Open during the spring, summer and autumn, this hill-top visitor centre hosts a Bird of Prey ‘Research Station’ where fantastic live and recorded CCTV footage can be seen of nesting ospreys, buzzards and peregrines. Volunteers and our Bird of Prey Officer are on hand to explain the birds’ comings and goings, and to provide information on events and what’s about along the Trail. There’s also a children’s quiz, footpaths, a shop and café.
The Lodge is a mile north of Aberfoyle on the A821 (known as the Duke’s Pass).This impressive building was gifted to the Forestry Commission in 1960 by the Carnegie Trust and later in the 1970s an exhibition wing was added by the Forestry Commission.
The new Bird of Prey ‘Research Station’ within the Lodge offers the opportunity to see ospreys set up their nests and rear their young over the summer. Live pictures are beamed from two nests and there is information, hands on exhibits, our Bird of Prey Officer and volunteers on hand to answer all your questions.
As well as excellent pictures of ospreys from Britain’s only osprey ‘nest cam’ there are also CCTV pictures of nesting buzzards and peregrine falcon. So even if you are lucky enough to see these wonderful birds along the Trail, come up to the Lodge for a really close up view!
David Marshall Lodge is also the ideal base from which to explore the surrounding forest. Way-marked paths starting from here range from half a mile to a four mile trek. Due to its hill-top location, the views from the Lodge are spectacular taking in the Campsie Hills, Ben Lomond and across Loch Ard Forest. Its new play park has been a great success, giving the parents time to enjoy Liz MacGregor’s Café and Coffee shop.
At the Lodge’s shop, you can purchase locally made crafts as well as good quality souvenirs, gifts, wildlife guides, nest boxes and bird feeders.
David Marshall Lodge is open at weekends in January and February, daily 11am to 4pm, and every day the rest of the year, except 25th/26th December & 1st/2nd January. More information is available by phoning 01877 382258.
