How big is it? Small

What colour is it? White chest with greyish brown back

What might I confuse it with? Nothing, they’re very distinctive

Where are they? All over the Trail, but most commonly where there are areas of woodland and/or hedgerows.

What are they normally doing? Barn owls can be seen hunting along hedgerows and over open fields, both in the dark and in the half light of dusk and dawn. Birds and animals that hunt at dusk and dawn are called crepuscular.

They have quite a blunt body and a rather choppy flight with curved wings, so they can look a little awkward in the air, and are certainly very distinctive!

Barn owls quite commonly sit on fence posts at the side of the road, and you can sometimes see them in your headlights, where they will appear very white.

Like tawny owls, they can sometimes be seen sitting in the middle of the road, where they can be blinded by car headlights.

They don’t hoot like barn owls, but instead have a hissing call, that’s surprisingly loud.
